Hyundai and Kia Unveil Innovative Snow Chain-Integrated Tyre Technology

In a move aimed at enhancing driver safety and convenience during snowy or icy conditions, Hyundai Motor and Kia have introduced an innovative tyre technology that integrates snow chains. While snow chains may not be commonplace in the UK, this new solution offers drivers an extra layer of grip and traction when navigating challenging winter road conditions.

How Does the Technology Work?

The groundbreaking technology revolves around tyres equipped with radial grooves embedded with shape memory alloy modules. These modules remain compressed within the grooves during normal driving conditions, ensuring a smooth tyre surface and optimal performance.

However, when confronted with heavy snow or ice, an electric current activates the modules, causing them to extend outward from the tyre surface. This protrusion increases contact with the road, maximizing traction and stability in adverse weather conditions. Once the road conditions improve and the electric current is deactivated, the shape-memory alloys retract back into the grooves, restoring the tyre’s flush surface.

Expected Release and Mass Production:

While the technology is currently patent pending in South Korea and the United States, Hyundai Motor and Kia have not provided a specific release date or disclosed which vehicle models will feature these tyres. However, both manufacturers have expressed their intentions to conduct further research and technological development to facilitate mass production.

Eliminating Fiddly Tasks:

If successfully implemented, this innovative solution could eliminate the cumbersome task of manually installing traditional snow chains. By seamlessly integrating snow chain capabilities into the tyre itself, Hyundai and Kia aim to enhance the overall driving experience, particularly in regions prone to inclement weather conditions.
